I've noticed no one, including myself until now, has mentioned Gould.  I
personally find *some* of his Beethoven sonatas right on, like his Opus 31
#2 and his Opus 27 #1.  (even Goode doesn't touch Gould on these two, and
I like both pianists very well!)

The problem with Gould is that he tends to take his own tempos and other
liberties with the score.  I think there was some discussion in another
thread about taking liberties with a score, and most of his Beethoven
doesn't fail.  But some does...  (I think you have to be a Gould fan to
appreciate *ever*thing he did.) And for gosh sakes, skip his late sonatas
at first!!:-)
