I would add another category (which I believe includes myself):
4) the serious listener, who has more than the basic repertoire, has
her/his own tastes (which are not necessarily "offbeat" or "obscure"),

I don't keep a close record of my annual rate of CD purchases, but it
certainly falls between 2) and 3).
