The best recorded performance by several leagues remains Hans Rosbuad's,
but nobody has bothered to reissue this on compact disc. There are also
versions by:
Gielen (Philips)
Boulez, BBC (Sony)
Boulez, Concertgebouw (DG)
Solti (Decca/London)
Kegel (Berlin Classics)
I've never heard the Kegel, although I am reliably informed that it is
quite decent. The poorest of the remaining sets, IMO, is Boulez's tame
Concertgebouw remake. The Gielen is the most intense of the first four
sets, and my recommendation, although I also like Boulez 1, which is more
involving if less smoothly played than Boulez 2. Solti (with the Chicago
Symphony Orchestra & Chorus) and Boulez/Concertgebouw feature the most
sumptuous and virtuosic playing, but that's not enough.
