He also conducted the Palestine (now Israel) Philharmonic during its
formative period.  Think what you wish of Toscanini as a conductor, as
a person unafraid to put his fame to good use he was a great example.
Perhaps that is why he developed an antipathy to Furtwangler during the
pre-war years.  Always remembering that F was AT's choice as successor at
the NY Phil in 1936 -- but that is a miserable can of worms to remember!
