Right on. I was fascinated when I heard Mahler re-orch'd Beethoven 5, 7 &
9 (7 was omitted from your post!). I have a version on Elysium [GRK 712]
with Peter Tiboris/Warsaw Sym conducting the 5 & 7 "incorporating Mahler's
reteuchen". The orchestrations are cool; some are minor changes like
updating for modern instruments, and much of the re-work seems to be
dealing with the switch from a Beethoven-Mozartian size orchestra to a
romantic-Mahler sized orchestra. Then there are some additional touches,
like curious doubling of some parts with different instruments to change
the coloring, etc. Although I found this very cool and interesting I must
say that the tempos do nothing for me, and I would only reccomend the
recording to 1)a Beethoven (or Mahler) completist; or 2)someone wanting to
hear the Mahler touches without needing another "good" Beethoven 5 or 7.
NB: never heard the 9th this way. Tiboris has a recording out on Bridge.
