Oh yes, although I do not think that music ought to be played only by
countrymen of the compsoer (this would be utterly sad), in the case of
Szymanowski his writing is so rich and subtle that it requires intimate
familiarity to be rendered properly, and in this connection, Polish
performances can be simply revelatory. I also like very much Kulka's
early version of both violin concerti.
If you like Szymanowski, you might consider trying Finnish composer Aarre
Merikanto (or maybe you know him already). The style is vastly different,
Ancient Greece and Harnasie are very far indeed, but there are quite a
few common features, and the orchestral and harmonic writing are most
captivating. I would recommend the Fantasy for orchestra, the 2d violin
concerto, the Symphonic Sketch, all available in outstanding
...Finnish
performances.
