i'm supposed to do something called a GRE next month sometime as part of entry
rituals into a doctoral program in the states (american scholarships being just
about the only way i can feasibly afford to pay for my continued education) -
now, although i'm applying to one specific program, i have also found
out that these GRE results can be forwarded to multiple recipients - anyone have
any suggestions about good departments? i plan to work on stratigraphy: first
look at the way it's been viewed by geologists, archaeologists, pedologists,
micromorphologists, maybe art restauration... then i want to try to synthesize a
way of dealing with all the conflicting and often contradictory views - as means
at getting there i thought about looking at topology (mathematical study of
surfaces), philosophy and linguistics (some of wittgenstein's stuff on "natural
classes" to start with), set theory, etc. - then find a practical way of dealing
with whatever conclusions i might (optimistic here or what?) come up with, and
possibly ways of dealing with complex stratigraphy in GIS...
so: stratigraphy, but also multi-disciplinary, imaginitive; i'll need a
good supervisor with patience (i can be a bit difficult and never did like
school much anyway) and a sense of humour...
also with a wife and kid used to living in europe, we want clean safe
campuses/cities...
        so any ideas/suggestions?
