WGBH (Signals) and Minnesota Public Radio (Wireless) used to offer identical
sets of Civil War bullets for sale. WGBH, as far as I know continues to sell
them and The Discovery Channel includes the same item in their 1999 Holiday
catalogue.
"Hold in your hands a tangible relic from our nation's most turbulent conflict.
These authentic rifle bullets... Certificate of Authenticity..."
Signals, after prodding by myself (not very effective) and the Virginia
Department of Criminal Justice Services, initiated their own investigation of
their source and decided to drop the bullets in the Spring of 1998. WGBH said
they had no control over what was sold by their catalogue division.
I'm sure that Discovery Channel, just like WGBH has been assured that these are
not "looted" artifacts. But, if they are from the same source, and the
packaging is virtually identical, the supplier buys them from a variety of
sources. They may be legally obtained, they may not. Regardless of the source,
it is ethically questionable for a public broadcasting station to profit from
the sale of relics.
