Ned,
In Monmouth County, New Jersey houses with earth- or clay-filled walls,
instead of the usual brick nogging, were constructed in the 18th and 19th
centuries. The Johannes Luyster House in Middletown, NJ (28-Mo-261), a Dutch
farmhouse from the 1720s, is an excellent standing example. Perhaps the mud
referred to in your document is the same as the clay used by J. Luyster.
