Dear Xavier
Thank you for your reply. The piece found was so small that it may
possibly have come from a bowl. Certainly in England they have children's
services that include flat bottomed bowls. Its a piece of whiteware, and
appears to be under glazed transferware.
It came from a site we have not as yet excavated. We were surveying
the site, which is a series of dugouts along a creek bank used by miners
and their families, when we spotted in on the surface. The bear's head was
very well defined and we were debating whether it was from a child's plate
etc or whether it came from a design intended for adults. Some times you
can get satirical or humerous designs on bowls and cups etc. Most of the
ceramics we find are blue and white transfer ware, or black and white
transfer ware, and occassionally chinese export ceramics.
                                        Best wishes
                                            Susan
