I don't have them in front of me, but I can recall several early
nineteenth century maps of the United States that refer to the
presence of buffalo east of the Mississippi. One that stuck in my
mind was a map of British dominions in America that referred to the
vast "plains of buffalo" in the area of present-day Buffalo, NY.
Sorry I can't recall the particular map, though.
