Dear colleagues:

below is a working abstract for a session at the 2000 SAfA conference in
Cambridge, England. Please accept my apologies for possible cross-postings.

"SAfA" stands for the Society of Africanist Archaeologists. The conference
will be held 12 - 15 July 2000.

Further information for those who are not (yet !?) members of Safa can be
obtained either through me or through the societies web pages:

------------------------

THE LATER PREHISTORY AND HISTORY IN THE bilad el-sudan

The session will focus on the various aspects of the Later Iron Age and
Historic Period in what is traditionally termed the bilad el-sudan, hence
the Sudanic and Sahelian belts of West and West-Central Africa, from the
Senegalese coast to the Chad Basin, and further beyond to the Nile.

In accordance with some of the general topics of the meeting papers given
in course of the session might for instance cover topics like

- emerging West-African societies and the resulting exchange with North
Africa in the first millennium AD,

- the interaction between expanding sub-Saharan Muslim states and
non-Muslim segmentary societies,

- the interrelation of climatic development and historic events.

These are just some suggestions. Of course any other topic is also very
welcome.

---------------------------------------

If possible do use e-mail for further communication.

I am looking forward to hear from you !
