The Monmouth County Historical Association
will be offering
An Archaeology Day Camp for 12-15 year olds
at Allen House, Shrewsbury, Monmouth County, New Jersey

Two week-long sessions are offered: July 13-17 and July 20-24 1998; hours
are
9am to 4pm.

Participants will learn basic archaeological techniques, and use them in
the field. Excavations will take place on the Allen House property (one
of four historic properties owned and maintained by the Monmouth County
Historical Association), located at the corner of Highway 35 and Sycamore
Ave., Shrewsbury, NJ. This property, as well as being located on the
Burlington Trail, a major Native-American thoroughfare, has been
continuously inhabited by Europeans since the late 1600s. These 300 years
of European occupation include many years of use as a tavern or public
house, "the most noted tavern in Shrewsbury", during the second half of
the eighteenth century.

The cost of the camp is $160.00 per week, which includes lunch. Materials
required for excavation will be provided. Maximum number of participants
per session: 10.

The project archaeologist is Megan Springate, who has a Master's Degree in
Historical Archaeology, as well as several years of field experience.
Megan also has experience in supervising field school students, ranging
from grade-school age through first year university. Other supervisory
staff members include Glenn May and Carole Smith, who both have many years
experience in presenting heritage-related programs to large groups of
grade-school and high-school age students.

Historical Association at (732) 462-1466, or fax (732) 462-8346.
