Since I posted it I must respond. I watched him testify to those facts on
CSPAN. Incidentally he claimed not only were they running the Canal, but were
to have a "Great Wall" tourist center at one end (the Atlantic end?) for
contact with tourists and others in the Western Hemisphere. These proceedings
were recorded and part of the Congressional Record, which I suppose I would
look up if I didn't know Mr. Smith to be a sincere Congressman, who was the
first Republican to announce his candidacy for President a few months back in
Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, incidentally home to 18th century kaolin pipe
makers. Mr. Dole and his wife have a house out near the airport there, and
former Vice President Dan "Potatoe" Quayle shows up in the small restaurants
there in Wolfeboro from time to time to discuss politics.
Professor Starbuck may know that the only Tory Governor to survive the
Revolution (once Governor of New Hampshire, then Governor of Nova Scotia
after) Governor Wentworth, since he has worked on sites in New Hampshire,
most recently at Canterbury Shaker Village, not far from Wolfeboro. General
Wolfe died in the attack on Montreal in the so-called French and Indian War,
and the town was named in his honor. I read with some delay there local
paper, and my colleague has a cabin on nearby Tuftonboro Neck in Tuftonboro,
on land once belonging to a Mr. Livius, who became one of the first Canadian
Supreme Court justices. Some interesting history has been done of the area
recently by a historian from Annapolis Naval Academy.
So, I must insist, this is what was broadcast, to the best of my
recollection, on CSPAN coverage of the House of Representatives.
