>
>The American Indian and Native Studies Program, The University of Iowa,
>will be conducting an archaeological field school at the Broken Kettle West
>site, Sioux City, Iowa from June 28-August 6, 1999. Broken Kettle West is
>part of the archaeological complex called Great Oasis, dating to around AD
>1000, and may be ancestral to the Mandan tribe. Prior excavations at the
>site in the late 1960s have revealed remains of collapsed lodges, as well
>as numerous artifacts of day-to-day life. Excavation at the site is
>possible owing to proposed highway safety improvements.
>
>Students will be trained in the standard archaeological excavation methods,
>mapping, screening, flotation, and a range of other techniques, as well as
>field laboratory processing of materials. This field school will
>specifically address many concerns that American Indian people have about
>archaeology and how it is conducted. Guest presenters from the area,
>several of them American Indian, will discuss key issues and field trips
>will incorporate these concerns. A board of American Indian advisors,
>several of whom are practicing archaeologists, has recommended many of
>these topics.
>
>Enrollment is limited to 14 and the deadline for registration is May 21.
>There are no prerequisites for this course; high school junior and senior
>students, undergraduates, and graduate students are encouraged to apply.
