Apologies for cross-postings.
The California Mission Studies Association 16th Annual Conference was held
this weekend. I am posting the paper titles, and have the snailmail
addresses of most of the participants if anyone wants to contact a presenter.
The Beginning and End of the Industrial Revolution of La Purisima Mission
(Robert L. Hoover - Bob talked about a mysterious column and waterpipe
feature that he has uncovered at La Purisima. He thinks it may be a
windmill...)
Documenting Everyday Life in Early California (Giorgio Perissinotto - this
is from a recently translated set of memorias and facturas, published by
the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation. Unfortunately, Dr.
Perissinotto was more interested in the linguistic aspects, than in the
material culture.)
Architectural Decorations at Mission Santa Ines and the Index of American
Design (Edna Kimbro)
Mission Santa Ines, National Historic Landmark (Julia Costello)
The Ranchos Surrounding Mission Santa Ines (Jim Norris - a local historian)
Survival of the Mission Grape in California (Eve Iversen - Eve let all of
us know that she has cuttings available of the original mission grapevine.
Apparently, this plant is so tough it practically grows by itself.)
From Sacred to Profane: Transforming the "City of God" on the Alta
California Frontier (Julie Wizorek & Russell Skowronek - an excellent paper
on the way Spanish cities and towns reflect the society itself.)
California Mission Architecture: The Adaption of an Architectural Type
(Catherine Ettinger)
El Camino Real Bells (Max Kurillo - a history of those green signposts
dotted around the landscape of California.)
Recent Archaeological Excavations at El Presidio de Santa Barbara State
Historic Park (Michael Imwalle)
Who Lived in the Family Housing at Mission La Purisima? Using Mission
Records to Discern the Elite Indian Families at the Mission (Glen Farris)
Conservation of Art at Mission Santa Barbara (Carol Kenyon - her before and
after slides were breathtaking.)
The Padrones at Mission San Luis Rey (John Johnson)
The Grist Mill and Fulling Mill at Mission Santa Ines (Richard Oglesby)
Presevation Benefits of Historic Landmark Status for Missions (Roy Hawthorn)
Tercentenary of Mission San Xavier in Baja California (Carmen Boone de
Aguilar)
Collection, Conservation, and Cooperation: A Report on the California
Mission Curators and Directors Conference (Kristina Foss - this meeting
brought all the mission people together for probably the first time.)
Mission Santa Ines Harbor? (Michael Loehr)
Personal Lives and Private Space in Colonial California (Jack Williams)
The Mission San Luis Rey Archaeological Project (Anita Cohen-Williams -
hey, what can I say? ;-) )
The Priest, the Governor, and the American: Decision and Denouncement
(Lorie Garcia)
Fr. Sarria's Account of the Chumash Revolt (Rose Marie Beebe & Robert
Senkewicz)
The Spanish Presidio Chapel, San Francisco: Preliminary Report on 1996-1998
Excavations (Rob Edwards)
