Monica and Ben,
    This may not be exactly what you're looking for (the time period being a
little bit later), but a while back Chicora Foundation excavated Seabrook
Plantation on Hilton Head where ex-slaves were taught as part of the Port Royal
experiment. I remember finding a lot of graphite pencils. You should contact
Mike Trinkley at [log in to unmask] to see if the report (or at least the
analysis) is finished.
