The following interesting piece of information comes courtesy of Judy
Nordgren ([log in to unmask]) on the Oregon Trail Rootsweb list:

<These postal rate changes will help a little on dating old letters.

July 1, 1885 2 cents
Nov 3, 1917 3 cents
July 1, 1919 2 cents
July 6, 1932 3 cents
Aug 1, 1958 4 cents
Jan 7, 1963 5 cents
May 16, 1971 8 cents
Mar 2, 1974 10 cents

Note the change up and down from 2 to 3 cents.>

The information was gleaned from a newspaper article from January 2000 when
new postal increases were proposed.
