For what it's worth, the most thorough reference  I've encountered on witch
bottles and similar uses of material culture is:
 
Ralph Merrifield
1987
The Archaeology of Ritual and Magic.
New Amsterdam Press, NY.
 
Merrifield concentrates on British examples from Roman times on up, but
some are relevant to this hemisphere as well...he even cites a 17th-century
example from the mid-Atlantic.
