Michael--can't help you on stratigraphy problem, but you might want to
contact Dr. Linda Stine in North Carolina.  She excavated a blacksmith shop
recently and might have some comparative data for you.  I think she has
email, but I'm not sure what it is.  Write her at PO Box 268, Julian, NC 27283.
