Of the 46 graves I have been involved with moving so far, average depth
was less than 4 ft to the base of the grave shaft. Most of these were
in Indiana glacial till, with a fragipan below 2ft. The average for the
adults was 114 cm (3.7ft) below current ground surface. The average for
children and infant graves was 80.4cm (2.6 ft)below current ground
surface. These graves had a wide range of depths; from as shallow as
36cm (1.2 ft,) to the deepest at 139cm (4.3ft). The Kentucky grave was
deeper, at about 1.5m (5ft).
