Here at the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site of Canada we completed
excavations of two lighthouses. The ruins of Canada's first lighhouse, a masonry
tower erected by the French at Louisbourg in 1734 were excavated and stabilized
in 1986. The adjacent colonial lighthouse, a masonry and wooden structure that
housed the lightkeeper's family was built in the 1840s and destroyed by fire in
1866. This structure was also excavated and the masonry ruins stabilized. Both
features are an integral part of Louisbourg's interpretive program. Information
