The Ballast Point Light House, 1890-1957, in San Diego, California, U.S.A.,
had a keeper's residence and an assistant keeper's residence. In 1991, I
directed investigations of an area around the front porch of the assistant
keeper's house. We found disturbed gardens, thin topsoil, several small
trashpits, and rubble from the 1957 demolition. I also removed the foundation
and found 1858-1886 English black glass and Chinese celadon bowl sherds from
a former whaling station. My on-going analysis is focusing on the pre-1890
whaling station and Chinese fishing camp at this time.
