There was an interesting discussion of phosphate analysis on HISTARCH
sometime in 1998 or 1997.  In particular, it was in relation of phosphate
soil testing as a survey tool and for the study of slaughterhouses and
tanneries.
 
Perhaps someone could post instructions on how to access and search the
HISTARCH archives?
