If you haven't read, a month after the susposed discovery of a trunk
reportedly belonging to William Robinson, a California bound "lost"
49er, and cached in Death Valley has been determined to be fake. The
Park reports that two tintype photos were printed using a process
developed after 1856, two ceramic bowls had 1914 manufacture marks,
tests of adhesive samples indicate 20th century polymers, and discussing
the matter with a local NPS archaeologist said that the gun holster
leather was too pliable for being 140 years old and an 1848 coin had too
much surface wear for being cached for a year. Freeman, an "amateur
archaeologist," who "discovered" and had removed the chest from Death
Valley to protect it is reported to have said, "The park can claim what
it likes, but I can't be swayed. I was told by some that once I moved
that chest the park would never validate the find. This new revelation
gives me a sick feeling in my stomach. My reputation has been ruined."
Very rarely do you hear of science exposing fruad. Skepticism paid off
once again. Let truth prevail, no matter how elusive or fleeting....ww
