A special issue of "Material History Review" (No. 50, Fall 1999) will be
devoted to the presentation of history to the public at museums, historic
sites, exhibit centers, and through commemorative plaques and special
events. By including a wide spectrum of disciplines-history, archaeology,
anthropology, folklore, architecture and museum studies-this issue will
address the diverse ways that history has been presented to the public.
Topics might include the contribution of public history to the development
of regional and national identity; the study and integration of material
and narrative history, local history and community heritage;
multiculturalism and cultural tourism; educational programming and
information technology. Contributors are invited to consider questions of
scholarship, authenticity, language, ethnicity and gender, as well as
regional and national political agendas as they are expressed in public
history.
"Material History Review" is a publication of the National Museum of
Science and Technology in Ottawa.
Interested researchers must submit a 250-word abstract by December 1,
