Dear Folks,
I have worked on a semi-subterrainian dairy (dairy processing) described in
1824 as a "Sunk Dairy" at Parramatta Park near Sydney (Australia) and have
heard of several others around here. The one I studied had an elaborate
drainage system - brick barrel drain passing through a deep cesspit. There
was also a well in the middle of the dairy structure!! There was little
evidence to show how the well was covered. Can anyone tell me of similar
arrangements elsewhere?
Regards,
Robert.
PS: Opal miners in one of the big opal fields out here often prefer to make
their homes the cool abandoned mines - with all the furnishings of a modern
home.
