I live in Fairport Village, outside of Rochester, that has a 19th century
tradition of relocating buidlings from one end to the other. The village
historian, Sue Roberts, says that they jacked up the structure and hawled it
to its new location using mules. There is one duplex house in particular that
has an unusual look. The house was originally a church. The church was sold
and moved to its new location at the base of a steep hill. When the mules
arrived at their location there was no way to turn around. So what one sees
today is the back of the church. What was the front of the church became a
double entrance to the house.
