This May, students from the Durango, Colorado, Community of Learners
charter school will be embarking on the Urban Wilderness Project, in which they
and their teachers will be traveling around the country investigating the
Urban ecology of the United States. They began their trip with an early
expedition to Denver, Colorado, where they were given background regarding
historical urban archaeology, and a tour of a soon-to-occur excavation
in downtown Denver. The group so enjoyed the perspective that
archaeology can provide that they are seeking out archaeologists who have
conducted investigations in the other cities they are visiting. They will
be in:

Pittsburgh
Cinncinati/Dayton
Chicago
Washington, D.C.
Boston
New York City
Los Angeles
San Diego
Minneapolis/St. Paul

If there is anyone on the list who would be willing to either talk to the
students, or better yet, give them a tour of your city's archaeological
sites, the students would greatly appreciate it. This is a good chance
for us as scholars to give back to the community.

Anyone interested in participating in the Urban Wilderness project,
please contact me off list.
