In the basement of the governor's palace in Williamsburg a sand layer was
discovered beneath the cut limestone floor.  This sand evened a clay subsoil.
 For more details about this anyone interested can contact Fred Smith, a
graduate student at Florida, who led the excavations there in 1993, or Dave
Muraca at CW.
p.s.  what if sand was not available?
