There is a good review of the topic, and list of detailed publications, in the
1992 edition of The Hive and the Honey Bee p 850 -868. I'm familiar with several
indoor wintering operation near here. Bees (1000-2000 col) are moved indoors
after the weather is consistently below freezing (mid November) and removed late
March to early April. Survival 75-90% of colonies. Outdoor overwintering can be
more successful in the same area (stronger colonies in mid April) but takes more
labour and feed.
