David,
Thank you for your correction.This strain of italians(calvert) did have
wall to wall bees in january and february 1997 and 1998(looser cluster
and  quite active).I compared these to other strains of italians or
carniolans that we have that drastically reduce brood rearing in the fall
and form a small tight cluster for the winter.
