Carl,
We are certainly not only bridges and iron works. Lots of changes in
recent years, but you should judge for yourself; take a look at the
tables of contents of some recent issues on the web site
(http://www.ss.mtu.edu/IA/sia.html), and/or stop by the display at
SHA. Neither the web site nor the display is terribly elaborate, but
they provide a sense of what members are up to. We have an article
on archaeology of a brewery in the Yukon in the current issue, and an
excellent article on excavation of a Michigan copper mining site in
one of the 96 issues, as well as one on mining in Italy under review
right now. We have strong contingents of both mining history and
railroad types among the membership. I am personally very much
involved in the study of historic mining sites. Unfortunately, the
railfans tend not to publish in our venue. And the pontists (bridge
enthusiasts) are prolific writers; that accounts for the relative
imbalance in published articles over the long run.
Check us out!
