I've used a palmtop computer for several years on
all phases of my contract work. It saves the
timewasting intermediate step of transcribing
notes and has the added attraction of being
legible which is useful given my handwriting.
Regularized data input forms are used for each
phase. The files are uploaded each day into the
main computer and printed. Data gaps are obvious,
sorting is simple and it fits into a shirt pocket.
Large clipboards are not necessary and freehand
drawings can be made in it. I don't go into the
field without one.
