For all his faults he did actually dig stratigraphically -its not called
the Wheeler-Kenyon method for nothing. For the method see _Archaeology
from the Earth_ , RJC Atkinson's _Field Archaeology_ or Ivor Noel-Hume's
_Historical Archaeology_. I was taught digging by plenty of people who
had dug with Wheeler and although by then the boxes were largely
abandoned anyone digging arbitrary levels where one could distinguish
separate layers would have been hung, drawn and quartered.
