JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
HISTORIAN POSITION
CULTURAL RESOURCES SECTION
MISSOURI DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION (MoDOT)

Job Summary:

The historian researches, evaluates, and prepares an account or record
of past and current events dealing with proposed project areas.  The
position is governed by federal and state legislation and regulations.
Responsibilities are performed under general supervision.

Examples of Work:

1.  Conducts research on the history of transportation project areas
for cultural resource surveys required by federal and state
regulations. 2.  Assembles historical data by consulting sources of
information. 3.  Organizes and evaluates data on basis of authenticity
and relative significance. 4.  Traces the historical development
within the project areas. 5.  Identifies historical sites which need
to be addressed during project location considerations, design, and
construction.
 6.  Interviews local residents to determine details of unwritten
history relating to the project area. 7.  Coordinates with the
archaeologist, the architectural historian, and the parkland
specialist to address issues relating to history and uses of land
through time within the project area. 8. Performs other
responsibilities as required or assigned.

Minimum/Required Qualifications:

Knowledge of American history as might be acquired through graduation
from an accredited college or university with a masters degree in
American history or a closely related field with a specialization in
Missouri history preferred.

Two years experience with the department in research, writing,
teaching, interpretation, or other demonstrable professional activity
or four years experience outside the department in comparable or four
years experience outside the department in comparable positions with
an academic institution, historical organization or agency, museum, or
other professional institution or public agency.

Substitution of experience for master's degree requires a waiver from
the Human Resources Committee.

 Special Working Conditions/Job Characteristics:
 Work requires occasional statewide overnight travel.

The Cultural Resources section of MoDOT is based in Jefferson City,
the state's capital. Salaries are competitive.  MoDOT offers a
generous insurance and benefits package to permanent, full-time
employees.
