Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest and the University of Virginia are
pleased to announce our tenth annual field school in historical
archaeology to be held on the grounds of Poplar Forest in Bedford County,
Virginia from June 7-July 10, 1998.
The five week field school is designed to teach the method and
theory of fieldwork in historical archaeology and offers participants the
opportunity to learn the practical skills of excavation, recording and
laboratory procedures. In addition, students will explore the role of
public archaeology in museum interpretation through readings and visits to
historic sites throughout Virginia.
This year, students will have the opportunity to work on two
sites--a late eighteenth-century slave quarter and the "south lawn" area of
Thomas Jefferson's ornamental pleasure grounds. The program includes
weekly lectures by staff and visiting scholars on such topics as landscape
history, plantation life, the techniques of soil analysis, remote sensing,
computer applications in archaeology, and career opportunities in the
public and private sector.
Credits: Students can elect to take the course for five graduate credits
from the University of Virginia, or can elect the non-credit option.
Scholarships: All credit participants in the field school will receive a
scholarship from Poplar Forest. This is a tuition grant that covers one
half of the tuition charge for five credit hours. With this scholarship
assistance, Virginia residents will pay $352.50 and out of state students
will pay $537.50.
For those not desiring academic credit, the non-credit fee is $295.
Housing is available at a local college at an estimated cost of $19/day, or
students can arrange their own housing.
To apply, please send a one page resume (including home address, home and
work telephone numbers) , a one to two page statement of personal and
