Boston University
Department of Archaeology presents
ARCHAEOLOGY OF RITUAL
The Third Annual Open Forum
for Graduate Students
- November 8, 1997 -
*SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS*
The goal of this year's conference is to allow graduate students in the
disciplines of archaeology, anthropology, history, art history, classics
and related fields to present their current research. Additionally, the
conference is structured to promote discussion of successes, problems and
goals of archaeological interpretation as well as its future bearings. The
keynote address will be delivered by Dr. Patricia A. McAnany of Boston
University. Professor McAnany, author of _Living with the Ancestors_, has
recently been studying the role of ancestor veneration in early Maya society
at K'axob, Belize.
The nature of "ritual" has a dubious past in archaeological studies, often
associated with functions, behaviors, or beliefs which are difficult to
characterize. Yet, studying ritual can provide an excellent opportunity to
look at many important aspects of archaeology as a whole, including the
connection between theory and method, the importance of mode of presentation,
and what archaeologists and scholars in related fields may learn from one
another.
Graduate students undertaking library or field research related to the
conference theme are encouraged to submit an abstract. Papers on general
theory, specific methodology, particular behaviors, or any other aspects of
studying ritual are welcome.
Abstracts may be submitted on any topic pertaining to ritual. Papers should
not exceed 20 minutes in length. Slide projection will be available.
Abstracts should be typed and no longer than 150 words. Submissions on
diskette or via e-mail are encouraged. Along with the abstract, please
inlcude a title, author(s), affiliation, address, telephone number and email.
The deadline for submission of abstracts is October 15, 1997. Abstracts
will be reviewed and selected based on their suitability for the conference
topic. Students will be notified of their acceptance by October 20, 1997.
