The best books to begin with are Neil Ascher Silberman's Digging For God
and Country:  Exploration in the Holy Land, 1799-1917 (Anchor Books, 1982)
and Between Past and Present:  Archaeology, Ideology, and Nationalism in
the Modern Middle East (Anchor Books, 1989).
