LA Brothel Archaeology On TV!

Learning Channel, February 25, "Hunt for Hidden Treasures", 8-8:30 EST (check
local listings!)

Last spring Julia Costello and Adrian Praetzellis directed excavations next
to Union Station in Los Angeles that included part of the 1880s-1909 red
light district. This aspect caught the public's fancy (???) and the news
media descended to see what was coming out of the brothel privies. The TV
show has field and lab footage and historic film stills and clips of the
"sporting life." It gives a good presentation of research and preliminary
findings. The mitigation project is a joint venture of Foothill Resources,
Ltd, Sonoma State University, and Applied Earthworks. It is sponsored by
Metropolitan Water District of Southern California as part of CEQA
(California Environmental Quality Act) compliance.
