Dear List:

I would very much appreciate any information on public archaeology programs
and projects which you think are of special interest.

I have a very short timeline for an article to be published in the new
Journal of Public Archaeology out of the Institute of Archaeology at London.
It would be wonderful if the first issue of the new journal had an overview
article on North America, so I am scrambling right now to get it done.

The subject is the current state of public archaeology across North America
and I have 6,000 words in which to do it, by October 12! Anyway, since most
of the up-to-the-moment material won't be in print yet, I thought I would go
to the experts and ask if you have suggestions, contacts or materials that
would contribute.

What I am planning is a page on each of the major government agencies and
their various initiatives, a half page or so on each facility or institution
dedicated to public archaeology, a piece on each of the associations and
organizations such as SAA ,CAA, SHA etc., a piece on the involvement of
Native American/First Nations communities, a section on museums, a piece on
inititiaves such as Archaeology Week and the Boy Scout Merit Badge, some
avocational and not-for-profit organizational programs, bit on unusual or
innovative programs to serve as examples (i.e. underwater programs) and a
short discussion of the relationship between CRM and educational archaeology.
My focus will be public archaeology as education, rather than in the broader
sense.

Did I miss anything important? If you like, I could include three or four
sentences on specific topics written by individuals, cited as quotations from
those of you who would like to send it in that way. Otherwise, just a couple
of points in an e-mail, reference to a web site, or a phone number for a
contact would be appreciated.

Thanks so much to all of you for your help, and happy fall (winter?),
KSmardz
