Gunston Hall Field School in Historical Archaeology
June 21-July 16, 1999
Gunston Hall Plantation and the University of Virginia Continuing
Education are pleased to announce their first jointly-sponsored field
school in historical archaeology. The intensive four-week course will
provide a working knowledge of standard archaeological methods by
stressing hands-on participation in field research at Gunston Hall, the
former Potomac Rivet estate of George Mason.
The focus of 1999 excavations at Gunston Hall will be the plantation's
colonial-era boxwood garden, which contains the oldest dated boxwood
plants in Virginia. In addition, the project showcases landscape
archaeology, which constitutes one of the most dynamic research areas in
historical archaeology today.
Gunston Hall is located 20 miles south of Washington, D.C., and is a
convenient commute for residents of the greater Washington area. Other
historical resources, including the Smithsonian Institution, Mount Vernon,
and Old Town Alexandria, are located nearby and will be visited during the
course of the 1999 field school.
The Gunston Hall Field School in Historical Archaeology carries four
graduate credits from the University of Virginia. Scholarship assistance
in the amount of $150 per participant will be awarded by Gunston Hall
Plantation, making tuition costs $414 for Virginia residents and $754 for
non-Virginia residents.
