In regard to the recent discussion about fee based Work Shops at SHA
Annual Meetings is the following historic record. At the 1988 SHA
Conference in Reno, Nevada during the Annual Business Meeting (January 15,
1988), which was very well attended, the following resolution was placed
on the floor before the membership: [SHA NEWSLETTER 21(2):8 June 1988]

Be it resolved that fees for all scholarly activities at
or in any way associated with the annual meetings of the
Society for Historical Archaeology be covered by the
general registration fee; that there be no separate
additional or special fees for such activities.

This resolution passed with a strong majority voting "Yes." There was
open discussion before the vote. Reference was made to two such fee-
Work shops in Reno, the problems about those (especially students) unable
to pay extra fees and the possibility of such an approach spreading to
other categories at future annual meetings, and the difference between tours,
the banquet and other secondary events which carry external costs. All
these points were outlined and several members argued for and against the
resolution.

The resolution passed and so is binding on the society and its
leadership. It is still official policy.
