Have had all the success I need raisinfg drones with foundationless
frames. Also always use medium size so they will fit my msh/mash of brood
chamber sizes (still culling out deeps). When placed in a deep box the
bees just extend it below the bottom board. Of course you don't try this
with a cup full of bees.
 
I have a whole box of drone foundation setting in my shed, it's been
there a couple years since I found it's use a waste of time and expense.
