According to Beau A.C. Harbin, Catholic University of America:

Well, of course "treasure" hunting is generally a pretty
destructive activity that usually destroys information--but I
don't think there's a whole heck of a lot that can be done
about such a newsgroup--this is a democracy after all.

I was excited by the work that has been done at Monmouth
Battlefield (SHA papers by Gary W. Stone and others) that
brought in a treasure hunting club and seems to have
"converted" them to the side of careful research and
preservation.

We will probably never legislate treasure-hunters away--
the only hope is to direct their energies into more
productive paths and abandon the holier-than-thou attitude that
is not unconnected to the recent political shift toward
deregulation.
