The 2000 SUNY-Binghamton Archaeological Field School will be held at the
site of French Azilum located near Towanda, Pennsylvania. French Azilum
was the site of a colony of aristocratic French refugees who fled the
Revolution in France and a slave revolt in Saint-Domingue. The colony was
founded in 1793 and abandoned during the first quarter of the 19th
century. Work this season will continue at the location of the de Sibert
residence. Sophia Bercy de Sibert was a wealthy widow from Saint-Domingue
who came to Azilum in 1793 along with her servants and slaves.

The field school runs from May 22 until July 6. Students will receive
training in archaeological excavation techniques, survey and mapping
techniques, field photography, basic artifact identification and basic
laboratory procedures. The field school is supervised by a faculty
committee including Professor Charlie Cobb, Professor Randy McGuire and
Dr. Nina Versaggi. The field instructors will be Rob Mann and Claire
Horn, both Ph.D. candidates in the SUNY-Binghamton Anthropology
Department. For more information please contact:
