Carl Steen makes a good point, as it seems to be the ware type that is in
question here. I have found similar sherds at an early to mid 19th
century trading post in Indiana. They are thin bodied, refined redwares
with white slipped interiors. As Mark B. points out the brown exterior is
likely just a clear glaze over the red paste. The trading post examples
do not appear to be lustre decorated and as Lon B. mentioned tbey are
extremely rare. On the trading post I can remember only about a half
dozen (very tiny) sherds of this type over the course of three field
seasons.
I have long been looking to identify this ware type but have never found
anything that fully satisfied me in the literature. I will however look
into "Astbury wares" to see if they fit the bill.
