****** DISCOURSE: CALL FOR PAPERS *****

SPRING 2000 ISSUE THEME: Food
DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: December 7, 1999
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES: included below

Submissions are now being accepted for the Spring 2000 issue of Discourse,
a new peer-reviewed, four-field print journal featuring current work by
graduate students across the globe. Each issue focuses upon a "universal"
topic. All graduate students are encouraged to submit work. Discourse
encourages traditional manuscripts as well as additional texts (dialogic
essays, critiques, interviews, debates, and other forms of communication).
We would like to encourage participation from the archaeological community.

SPRING ISSUE: The theme for the Spring 2000 issue is food -- a theme with
myriad avenues of inquiry. Food getting, preparing, eating, sharing,
discarding, and other aspects of food and the human experience are all fair
game. Faunal research, privy studies, and kitchenware analyses are just
some possibilities.

Submissions may target specific topics or address more widespread issues
relating to the theme, and should communicate ideas to audiences across the
subfields. Submission Guidelines are included below.
DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: December 7th, 1999.

We will also consider submissions dealing with subject matter outside of
the issue theme, or material for future issues. Upcoming themes include
Death (Fall 2000, open deadline at present) and Sex (Spring 2001, open
deadline at present).

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES: DISCOURSE

Discourse is a paper format peer-reviewed journal dedicated to publishing
the research of anthropologists working at the graduate level in all four
fields of anthropology or related disciplines. At this time, we are seeking
articles and book reviews for our second issue scheduled for a Spring 2000
release.

Submission guidelines:
All graduate students enrolled in an anthropology program are encouraged to
submit their work. The journal is aimed toward graduate students across the
sub-fields. Papers may be technical in content, but should be geared toward
anthropologists outside of the author's field and area of specialization.
Word count should fall between 5,000 - 8,000 words; book reviews should
range between 750-1000 words. Include an abstract no longer than 100 words
with your submission.

Please submit articles on disk as well as hard copy. Disk copies should be
saved in a common word-processing format (such as Microsoft Word or
WordPerfect), and should be formatted for IBM-compatible operating systems.
Include the author's name, article title, file name, word-processing
program, and operating system on the disk label.

* Five paper copies of the article should be submitted. Individuals with
restricted access to photocopiers may submit one copy.

* All copies should be double-spaced and printed in a large sans-serif
font, preferably Courier or Helvetica 12 point.

* Citation style should conform to standard social science conventions
(Author date: page). For general guidelines on style, follow American
Anthropologist specifications (see their website at www.ameranthassn.org
for more details).

* Include the author's name at the top of every page.

Manuscripts that are not accepted will be returned if a self-addressed,
stamped envelope is included. Authors may request anonymous referee
comments after the peer review process has been completed.
