The Avalon Colony at Ferryland in Newfoundland was founded for the Calvert
family, the same folks who later founded the Maryland Colony. Jim Tuck and
students from Memorial University in St. John's have been digging there for
a number of years. They have a puplication series called Avalon Chronicles
(ISSN 1205-853X) which is up to volume 3.
For those interested in this area of enquiry, we are planning a special
public symposium as part of the 1999 Council for Northeast Historical
Archaeology meeting at St. Mary's City, Maryland entitled "Ferryland to
Maryland: The Calvert Experience in the New World". This session is
contingent on funding, but it looks likely to be a go.
