"Fuel for the Frontier: Industrial Archaeology of Charcoal Production in
the Eureka Mining District, Nevada 1869-1891" (my doctoral dissertation,
University of Nevada, Reno, 1996) contains a lot of material on
Swiss-Italian return migration to various areas. The study area itself
is one of the temporary work destination points throughout the globe
(other popular areas being S. America and Australia). They came to
dominate labor and in some cases other positions within the local
charcoal industry.
C. Lynn Furnis has just completed a Masters thesis at the same
institution on individuals from the same time and region that settled in
Old Sacramento. Her work is so recent that it will probably be a while
before it is available at University Microfilms or through interlibrary
loan.
You can contact Lynn at ARS, P.O. Box 701, Virginia City, NV 89440
